Eastbourne and the wider area of the East Sussex coastal culture trail is full of exciting, quaint tourist attractions and places to eat and drink. With its free entry, modern design and delicious food and beverages available at their café, the Towner is an amazing way to kick off the East Sussex Coastal Culture Trail.
3. Favoloso: Located just down the road from the Towner, Favoloso Ice Cream Parlour is a gorgeous retro-themed café that delivers a wide range of food, with their magnificent ice cream sundaes the statement pieces of their delicious menu. A great place to go to refuel after a day of cycling!
4. Eastbourne Pier: Arguably the most iconic landmark on Eastbourne’s Victorian-chic waterfront, the pier is a must-see for anyone visiting Eastbourne for the first or twenty-first time! Its eclectic variety of shops and amusements make it a great attraction for all the family; whilst the stunning views of the sea and the Eastbourne Seafront, with Bexhill and Hastings visible on clear days, make it an ideal destination for those on the coastal culture trail.
5. Redoubt Fortress: Built over 200 years ago to keep Napoleon’s armies out of Britain, this unique piece of history is one of only three surviving Napoleonic Redoubts in the UK, and was also used to defend Britain in both World Wars. Like these other locations, the Redoubt has a quaint café, and this one fits with the attraction’s military theme.
6. Sovereign Harbour: Home to a beautiful Mediterranean-style waterfront, the Sovereign Harbour is a must-see. Whether you’re just cycling through on the way out of Eastbourne, or stopping to enjoy the wide range of restaurants and cafés with al fresco waterside dining, the boats and modern architecture make this area a refreshing slice of continental culture in the UK.
7. Pevensey Bay: Another area of historical significance, this is the site of the Norman landing during their 1066 Conquest. Further along to Normans Bay and Cooden Beach, the pretty pastel beach huts help to set the charming Sussex Coast scenery.
8. De La Warr Pavilion: Another iconic landmark of the East Sussex coastline, the De La Warr is an art gallery and cultural centre located in Bexhill, and is a great place to stop whilst taking the Coastal Culture Trail. Year-round exhibitions, music, theatre and other cultural events make this an ideal destination for budding culture vultures. Cycling along the coast to here is a breeze with an electric bike!
9. Hastings Pier: ‘Like a phoenix from the ashes’ as it says on the pier’s website, Hastings pier has been risen from dereliction and is now another stunning landmark of the Sussex coast. Now a very entertaining place for children and adults, the pier is a must-see for those looking for a fun and exciting day out. It’s only a short cycle from Bexhill and is another must-see for those who can easily travel about on their electric bikes.
10. Jerwood Gallery: located on the picturesque Stade in Hastings’ Old Town, the Jerwood is another modern and dynamic arts centre for the electric biker with an eye for culture. Home to the Jerwood Collection of Modern and Contemporary British Art, this gallery also boasts a lovely café, Webbe’s, which has an outside sun terrace and panoramic views of the coastline. The Gallery’s shop with eco-friendly stationary also appeals to the ecological efficiency of the e-biker on the Coastal Culture Trail.
